Gameplay 2 / 10 |
Before I begin, I just want to mention that I haven't played all of the game, nor do I ever plan on finishing it anytime soon. I've also only played the game with a PS4 controller; and no I'm going to bother playing it with a keyboard, the game is already hard enough with a controller. So first, we'll start by talking about the controls. The controls are pretty poor and are one of the game's biggest flaws. They can be hard to work with, unreliable, and make the game more frustrating than it should be. They aren't "Bubsy 3D-bad", but that's still not saying much. Another one of the game's problems are the collisions. For example, when you ground-pound the P switches it sometimes works, but other times it doesn't - so basically, the collisions can be a hit-or-miss. The collisions in the trees are also pretty poor; like, sometimes you can stand on top of them and sometimes you can't (then again, the poor controls don't help, either). There's a puzzle in the first world where you have to push a box onto the P panels to earn a star. It may not seem that bad, but here's the thing - you can fail the puzzle by either pushing the box into a wall, a corner, or over the edge. This means you'll have to kill yourself in order to try again since boxes don't respawn nor can they be pulled towards you. Other things that I haven't mentioned but wanted to quickly point out are: - You can only wall-jump when Mario is facing the wall (and even that may not always work), this can sometimes make wall-jumping more frustrating - Mario can't turn in mid-air - No exit game button in the title screen - No HUD indicators for the purple coins - No lives system (probably for the best since the game's flaws make it frustrating enough, but an option would've been nice) |
Graphics 4 / 10 |
The graphics are fairly decent and the models look good pretty good. However, the characters and environment look lifeless. Some of the animations are sluggish (like Mario's victory animation after he collects a star) while others look unfinished or unnatural. The lighting for the most part is okayish, although there are certain parts (specifically in World 2) that are a bit dim. |
Sound 5 / 10 |
I don't really have much to say about the audio so I'll make this quick: The sounds are alright. The music can get a bit repetitive, but it's sometimes ok. But yeah, that's pretty much it. |

The game has potential, but it's weighed down by its many flaws to be enjoyed. |
