Bowser's Last Stand
preview
By: onpon4 [E] [W]
You are Bowser. A group of Mushroom people breaks into your castle and declares that the Koopa Kingdom has been taken over while you have been "practicing" for your next fight with Mario. Your mission is to take back what belongs to you and seek your revenge on the Mushroom Kingdom!

The original Game Maker 8 source file is included with the download for anyone who wants to use or look at it. As stated in the Help dialog, all parts of the game created by me are released to the public domain.

This game supports online high scores. To see the online list, simply select the "Synchronize Lists" option, which will also send your high scores to the online high score table.

Have fun playing! :)

Version 0.4.0 has been released.

One of the big changes is continuing a game over doesn't send you back to level 1 any more; it just drops your score to 0 now. You can see a complete list of the major changes in the link above.

Hey, you used the Bowser Engine 1!

Yeah, of course. I made Bowser Engine 1, though, so what's your point? :) Besides, it's very much improved.

Actually, I consider Bowser Engine 1 to be obsolete now. I deleted its pages on my website and on YoYoGames Sandbox, and its topic in the GMC now points to BLS's topic.

Version 0.5.0 has been released.

I have also uploaded a save file which will start you off on World 5, for those of you who just want to see the new levels:

The biggest change (in my opinion) is using the Bowser Bomb no longer causes Bowser to be "dizzy". You can read a full list of changes on the BLS page on my website (linked above).

Version 0.6.0 is now available.

I'll list off the changes here since there's only a few this time:

- Added World 6.
- The stamina bar now looks nicer and displays properly on all platforms.
- The shell dash now has a flat stamina cost of 10 rather than setting Bowser's stamina based on the amount of charge, meaning short shell dashes are no longer excessively cheap while long shell dashes are no longer excessively expensive.
- The cost of deflecting Megabowser's flames has been reduced from 30% to 10% of Bowser's stamina.
- A lot of "?" blocks and bricks have been raised to prevent them from getting in Bowser's way like they did previously.
- It is now possible to change directions while Bowser is in the middle of shooting fire.
- The level editor guide now explains the collision system.
- Bowser can now protect himself from bullet bills with the Whirling Fortress.

OK! Update has been queued!

Anyway, a bugfix release has been made, 0.6.1. It fixes a small bug and modifies the World 6 castle level.

World 8 being released?

Huh? The game has been finished for 7 months now. Has all 8 worlds, plus a bonus level called "World 666".

I seriosuly enjoyed the game: Especially the before last boss: it was more epic than the last one with all the toads comming.

And I'm still stuck at world 666^^

Just a quick update: I have no intention to work on this game any more. It's way past done, and I'm happy enough with the result.

At NCFC 2012, I teased for a possible sequel a bit. If it's done, the sequel will be in Python instead of Game Maker, so an engine rewrite is needed. Because of that, it will take some time. I intend to fix a lot of problems and perceived problems with Bowser's Last Stand in the sequel:

- Some people still think the Bowser Bomb takes too long to complete. The next game will either just get rid of the wait time (which would ironically make the Bowser Bomb take less time than the Ground Pound), or allow you to cancel out of it by jumping.
- The lack of variation in enemies has been criticized. BLS 2 will have more of them.
- Megabowser was admittedly overused. I think a "perfect" version of Megabowser will show up in BLS 2 more or less as a continuity nod and a demonstration of how much more powerful Giga Bowser is, rendering Megabowser obsolete.
- A lot of people wrongly assumed that BLS is based on Hello's SMB engine because of the graphics. Partly because of this, but mostly because I'm looking for a different feel, BLS 2 will use different tiles.
- Some people didn't like the MIDIs I used in BLS. I'll be using Ogg music instead in BLS 2, and music from games other than Super Mario Bros will be common.
- Bowser being the same all the time was criticized a bit in BLS. BLS 2 will introduce Giga Bowser as a powerup (probably a temporary one, like Mega Mario), and either a mini-mushroom or losing all health will cause Bowser to shrink, making him weaker but allowing access to more areas. I might also consider other powerups if they're possible.
- Some people find that Bowser's powers have little necessity since the spin dash in particular is not required until late in the game. This was a design choice to give the player a chance to learn how to do it. BLS 2 will either make the assumption that the player has "read the fine manual" or played BLS before, or use a quick tutorial of some kind to explain them.

I have other projects that take priority over BLS 2, so I don't know how long it will be, but the engine I'm writing for another game will also be used for BLS 2. I expect at least a couple years. Assuming NCFC is still around when a BLS 2 demo is ready, that is where I will show it first.
