Pros | + Solid gameplay + Fantastic graphics + Great soundtrack + Good plot |
Cons | - A few minor gameplay issues here and there |
Gameplay 9 / 10 |
The game plays pretty well. The engine is solid, and Mario's moveset is large enough to provide interesting gameplay without becoming too overwhelming (though I will admit that I did press the long jump button when I wanted to hammer and vice versa a few times). The level design is pretty good, and the Collect 8 Stars level is especially great. There are a few small problems here and there (the timing for triple-jumping is a bit tricky, your attacks sometimes don't damage enemies properly etc.), but they generally don't affect the experience much. The story is pretty neat. It's not an award-winner or anything, but it's definitely among the better fangame stories, especially with its multiple endings. Can't wait to see what the sequel brings. |
Graphics 10 / 10 |
The graphics are nothing short of phenomenal. I don't know if all of them are self-made or just most, but they fit together perfectly regardless. The various graphical effects in the levels also add to the 'weird late-80's-to-early-90's computer game from the UK' vibe really well. |
Sound 9 / 10 |
The soundtrack is solid and feels unlike basically any other fangame (that I've played, anyway). Using remixes and stuff instead of the originals is genius. The sound effects are also mostly good. Some of them (like the 'talking sound') get a bit annoying. |

A really solid example of what fangames can be when they don't constrain themselves to being 'Just Like Super Mario Brothers Three!!!'. |
