General Commentary and Game Overview
An unofficial sequel to Super Mario XP, this tech demo by Mattdraw might not have much to show, but it's a promising start for a quality fan game.

Pros + A pretty good tech demo.
+ Excellent graphical effects.
+ Good music and sound.

Cons - Mario is too big.
- Some graphics clash with the theme of this game with little reason.

Impressions
Gameplay
8 / 10
It's a tech demo, so there's not a lot of gameplay to be had. There's only one "level", if you can call it that. Nonetheless, this little demo seems to be quite promising.

Mario can take four hits by default, but one Super Mushroom will either heal him by 1 hitpoint or (if his health is full) give him a temporary hitpoint (it doesn't seem possible to get more than one of these). There are two sub-weapons available: the default fist, and the fire flower. I'm sure that later releases will have more to choose from.

It's hard to say much more, given the level of content in the game right now, but I do like what I see. I'm sure it would be a lovely unofficial sequel to Super Mario XP.

Graphics
8 / 10
The various effects in the game so far--the rain, the lighting of the lava pits, and the attack animations--are all pretty splendid. If the final product was entirely like this, Mattdraw would get astronomical graphics scores for sure.

However, there are some quibbles to be made. The graphics for power-ups are either poorly recolored rips from NES games or taken directly from Super Mario XP, and they clash with the rest of the graphics. Also, Mario is just too big. In this game he's 2 1/2 blocks tall, when in most games he's just under 2 blocks tall, and everything else is scaled to Mario's normal size.

But since it's a tech demo, I'm not going to be too hard on that.

Sound
9 / 10
Everything fits and sounds pretty good. Again, it's hard to say much given the circumstances, but the music and sound effects are all nice.

I'm not sure if I like the voice used for Mario. It isn't his voice and it doesn't have the charm of Super Mario XP's gruff Japanese man.

Replay
1 / 10
Well... no. It's just a demo, and there isn't really a reason to play it again unless you want to help look for bugs. That said, I'm not going to let this count towards the final score.

Final Words
8 / 10
A promising tech demo for Super Mario XP's sequel.

Personally, I like his size. But that might just be me. :/
