Pros | +The graphical effects look nice +The wall jumping is nice, I suppose +Yay for not using many SMB3 sprites! +16:9 screen (That obviously comes with Hello's 6th engine, I think, looks nice nonetheless) +Hello has definitely improved his engine +Bowser isn't the main antagonist, which is nice +Yay, no lives! |
Cons | -Frustrating -Why the wall jumping over pits? -Mario's vocabulary has DRASTICALLY decreased since Super Mario Eclipse, but normally, I care more about actual gameplay -The rock music is put in the wrong spots -I swear that there is a piranha plant in every pipe |
Gameplay 7 / 10 |
Oh look, The Mushroom Kingdom finally has embraced industrialization thanks to Luigi! However, Luigi got greedy and put the kingdom under darkness. Now Mario has to stop his own brother from doing any more evil! That's the plot. Now, let's go onto the ACTUAL juice of the game: Gameplay. Now as soon as you start, the level is, of course, dark. The game also has pretty lighting effects, but those are graphics, not gameplay. Like a lot of Hello's games, it uses Hello's Engine. So you are thinking: Oh, another generic Mario clone. No, because it's definitely different. Mario can now wall jump! Wall jumping is extremely important for a lot of the levels, otherwise...you aren't going to far. Then, there are "people" that thinks it's "awkward." I honestly don't see how these "people" find this awkward. Nothing about it is really "awkward"; and even if it is "awkward", the only things I found "awkward" is the VERY slight delay between Mario and getting on the wall, and how floaty Mario is when he jumps of the wall, and then again, those are extremely minor, so no, I won't screw up trying to do it, and no, I won't die from trying to do it UNLESS if I'm doing it over a bottomless pit. Some may think that wall jumping kind of makes it more difficult due to how it's handled, but I don't think anything is wrong with it. Speaking of which, there's wall jumping over bottemless pits. These are the hardest freaking things you'll ever encounter in this game! This, added with the fact that piranha plants are in almost, if not all of the pipes, makes this EXTREMELY frustrating. Luckily, they aren't very abundant. The game is also more of a exploring and parkour type game than a platformer. Did you find a dead end? Explore. Also, the parkour makes use of the wall jump feature. The game TRIES to be forgiving by removing lives and adding more checkpoints. Also, checkpoints fully restore your health, so if you are low on health and touch a checkpoint, you'll get your health back. And then, some levels have you restricted to one Mario form; Normal Mario in the first level, Hammer Mario in the second, Bee Mario in the third...yeah. However, I'd like it much if Hello didn't make me start out as Hammer Mario in the second level because 1. That powerup is terrible, and 2. It didn't really feel all that important. But, there's no need to cry over spilled milk. Other than that, I like the idea of restricting Mario to a certain powerup in certain levels. Good. |
Graphics 6 / 10 |
Now actually on the topic of graphics, they actually look pretty nice, but I'd give it a 7 if some of the graphics weren't the same generic SMB3 ones. He's also not using Black Squirrel's tileset! Black Squirrel's tileset is by no means bad, it's actually very good, but it has been very overused since the beginnings of Hello. So...good on that! There's also a 16:9 screen, so if you have a 4:3 monitor, I don't think it will work, but I don't know, my Windows XP monitor (4:3 screen) doesn't have a graphics card, so...yeah... Good. |
Sound 5 / 10 |
The music is very obviously rock/metal remixes of SMRPG songs. They sound nice, but they are put in VERY unfitting spots. Like the third level uses a rock remix of the boss theme from SMRPG, but it's a ruins level, not a boss level! The map music is in a very odd spot too. I know that Hello was going to use music that sets the tone: dark, but it really isn't. I'd expect rock to be used in more serious-themed media, and for the dark theme, atmospheric and/or emotional songs, like the map music, even if I found it being used weirdly. Sound effects consist of Modern Mario voice clips (Good on you for not using those crap-quality and overused SMA4 voices) and generic Mario sound effects. OK. |
Replay 6 / 10 |
Eh, I most of the time come back trying to beat this game, but it's very hard, and I don't think you'd want to come back after playing it once. |

Super Mario Dynamo isn't the best of Hello's work, but I enjoyed it for the time being. It's also definitely not Hello's hardest game, his hardest game would probably be Super Mario Bros: Dark Days. Super Mario Dynamo is just...OK for me. If you want to try it out, by all means, go ahead. Just expect a bit of frustration. |
