Gameplay 4 / 10 |
Luigi sets out to rescue professor E. Gadd. He winds up in a mansion, and must examine objects in order to progress. There is also a phantom of sorts chasing him, which you have to hide from at some points. So I'll get right to it. A game that entirely consists of walking and examining things is boring. This game is more like a point-and-click adventure game in platform...form. There are a few things to make this kind of game better, such as more actiony sequences, or funny writing when you examine things, or a good story. This game has thought put into the text, but not much else. Speaking of text, sometimes the text would overlap and become a mess that you couldn't read, although the problem fixed itself a short while afterwards. The highlight of the game is when you have to hide from the ghost. However, you're given plenty of time to hide, and this sort of thing only happens twice. I'm not really sure what would cause you to fail these sections since I passed both the first time. I think this is a great idea but unfortunately it was underutilized. The majority of the game consists of walking and looking at things. You'll usually have to use an object you found elsewhere to open a path to the next area (by examining objects in order). There weren't any puzzles that I would call difficult. The game itself is also short. There are around eight rooms in total. So the story is minimal really. Not much is explained. The resolution of the whole phantom thing is very climactic (especially since it all happens in a cutscene). The actual ending is about as good as the ending to the original Super Mario Bros (you've saved me good job). And then the credits roll. So gameplay leaves a lot to be desired, although there are good ideas. Why is there a giant sewer under the mansion? |
Graphics 8 / 10 |
The graphics are great. The colors and the style lend itself well to a 2D horror game. There's also some rain effects going on, which is nice. At times the game was a little too dark for my taste (as in I couldn't read the text). Some objects are less detailed compared to others, but there isn't anything in the game that really clashes. |
Sound 8 / 10 |
Music choice is overall great. Some tracks actually add to the atmosphere. There are a couple that are loud and don't really belong in a horror game (in particular the one playing as you walk to the mansion). At least you picked music from other game series. That really goes a long way. The sound effects aren't really noteworthy. |
Replay 1 / 10 |
I'm certainly not interested in replaying the game. There doesn't seem to be anything beyond the one path you take through the game. |

The game has good atmosphere. I'm not upset that this game isn't scary, but I am upset with how minimal the gameplay is. |
