General Commentary and Game Overview
I swear, sometimes I go into these on a whim and I find out that some old fangame is just a nightmare, or that it's a hidden gem of absurdist Mario proportions.

Today... I found an old one level demo that was going to be all of this and then some. Okay, admittedly not really, but it's probably somewhere in the middle, right?

I won't lie to you, Sam - this is about as run of the mill as they come. I've covered so many of these old "trying too hard to be a real Mario game" Clickteam romps, which as many who grew up in the Clickteam era of fangaming will tell you is decidedly NOT playing to the strengths of the program, and I run into the same issues every single time. What else is there to say anymore?

I'll try to keep the usual problems brief, as such: you get stuck a lot, but if you know how to deal with that, it won't be as much of an issue as you'd think. The level design is lacking, but what else is new? The engine screams amateur, and the springs throw you up without any momentum or physics to speak of.

Okay, now with that out of the way...! There's a lightning power up! Yes yes, like in Mario Kart, and it works about the same as well: you get one go with it, and it clears all the enemies on screen, I think. Only found it once, and I accidentally used it when it was just one Koopa Trooper on screen, so I think that's what it does. Alternatively, think the Mic/Crash abilities in Kirby.

The starman also makes an appearance, but it confused me initially. It gave Mario a strange circular barrier, and didn't change the music or anything to imply the power was temporary. I thought "man, this is broken as garbage can come", thinking that I have invincibility forever, right? Well, no, there was a time limit, and it was just communicated poorly - in that it wasn't communicated at all. Just shoddy conceptual thinking, I guess.

It's about what you'd expect. Mario is from SMA2, which was contemporary at the time of this game's release (2003, for those of you playing at home), the rest is a hodgepodge of other Mario games and it works almost-well in that sort of "bad clashing fun" way.

Sound
7 / 10
I'm giving this one a good rating purely because of two elements: the creator's stupid silly intro screen, where a text-to-speech monotonously speaks out the text on screen (because it was funny), and the absolutely unpredictable hard rock sitcom transition music he used for the level intro screen (because it was so surreal that it was amazing). The rest is your typical MIDI slogs and bad old sound rips.

Replay

It's one level that ends the application abruptly when you leave the right end of the play area. You ain't gonna see me play this one again any time soon, is what I'm getting at.

Final Words
2 / 10
Mediocre, dull, short, and yet it all comes together in a package that somehow, against all odds, manages to be... exactly all of these things. It has a curveball of a cute/funny idea every once in a while, but it's not enough to justify downloading this and giving it a whirl. Unless you're into that sorta thing like I am, then by all means: go nuts!
