General Commentary and Game Overview
SMBB looks like a joke game at first. You know, those zany games with the most random possible things thrown into a blender, with some gameplay to keep you occupied between jokes. This is what I was expecting. Not here.

Instead, SMBB is actually a straight forward Mario fangame that happens to have silly stuff in it.

The difference is that here, the dev's attention seems to have been spent a larger than normal proportion of the time on the gameplay itself, rather than trying to make a ton of jokes. It feels more like a normal fangame than your typical joke game. That works in this game's favor.

Of course, there are silly stuff here (like the background of 5-2, for example), but they don't occur as often as one would expect. It plays more like a silly platformer than your typical joke game, which mainly would focus on maximizing bizarre nonsense at the expense of the gameplay.

Pros +Unique visual style
+Mario's Voice
+Humor never gets annoying
+Focus on gameplay

Cons -Boss battles are too chaotic
-Weird loading issue when starting a bonus stage
-The lives system only serves as an annoyance
-Difficulty spikes in places
-Physics are awkward at first
-It takes a long time to get to the silly stuff
-There are many cases where you have to commit to a jump without being able to see the other side, leading you to just hoping for the best.

Gameplay
7 / 10
So, it's your typical Mario platformer, with some slightly awkward physics, but you get used to it quickly. It seems heavily inspired by SMB1.

The lives system is unnecessary. When you die, you start the level over. But on a game over, you go back to the file load screen. There isn't any other consequence for a game over, making it nothing more than an annoyance. Why not just get rid of lives altogether?

Then, the game saves the amount of lives you have in between levels. If you clear a level with only one life left, then whenever you die in the next level, you just get booted back to the file load screen. This gets annoying very quickly.

Now, the boss fights. Perhaps the silliest part of the game. However, they move too fast, and are too difficult. Writing this made me realize why the official games usually have slow and simple bosses: the penalty for taking damage is really high. It seems like that isn't taken into account during the boss battles. I was forced to spam the Super Saiyan form. Oh, and you can't really use it in world 9, since you lose all your coins when you start it.

Finally, in the later levels, there are way too many enemies in one spot. The strategy there is just to go as fast as you can and hope you avoid them all.

With all this combined, I gave up on the last stage.

Apologies if I sound overly critical, I just needed to vent my frustration. Most of this only really became a problem near the end.

Graphics
10 / 10
It looks like it was made in MS-Paint. Except in this case, it actually looks good. Has a unique style you don't see very often.

Sound
9 / 10
The choice to use Mario's pinball voice is a stroke of genius. The sound effects are good too. The music is alright.

Final Words
8 / 10
While it looks like a joke game, it actually plays it straight (mostly).

I think I may have been too negative when writing this. I still stand by the score, but I believe that what I wrote put to much focus on the negative.

It is a fun game, don't get me wrong, it's just that the negatives happened to happen all at the same time, near the end. That led to that stuff being the freshest on my mind when I was writing it.

I should also add that pressing C on the title screen makes the boss battles easier. And the backgrounds of a lot of the fights have a lot of charm.

I encourage anyone who is curious to try out this game.

There's been an update to the game since I wrote this: coins are no longer reset after finishing world 8. Plus some other adjustments.
