Anjelo's Province
preview
By: CrazyRiverOtter [W]
Anjelo's Province is a remake of Super Anjelo Land (now titled Anjelo's Land) by IndieAnjelo. The game is heavily inspired by the Super Mario Land games, and is intended to look like an emulated Game Boy game.

By the way: I've been saying that some of the "glitches" in the game are really intended, such as the fall-jump and the layering of the HUD. These ARE intended, but any other glitch in the game is an actual glitch, and I'd be glad if you told me about it.
Completion: Full Game Genre: Platform
Franchise: Mario

so uh

what does this have to do with Mario exactly

being based on Mario Land isn't exactly a free pass

It is nice to see someone have an interest in Super Mario Land.

Good question. I suppose I thought it was similar enough to be accepted on the site, as a select few games on the site are really not about Mario. If it's too different from the Mario Series to be considered on the site, I might deal with it, but as for now, I'll wait to see if it really is too different.

Edit: In fact, it was intended to be a parody of Super Mario Land, but the original creator of the Anjelo Land series had me change the name.

If you fall off a ledge and then hit the jump button, you can jump in midair. Might want to fix that.

But yeah, this is a decent enough game (ignoring some rough edges), but I'm not entirely sure it belongs on the site.

You wouldn't believe how many times I've tried to tell people that it's not a glitch, but a gameplay feature I forgot to mention that I put in to make the game seem a bit more fair.

Jack-of-all-games is the one who told me that I could put this on the site...

It's a feature, not a glitch? Well, I guess the issue is that it seems too much like a bug.
Perhaps change it to a double jump or something? I dunno, just a suggestion.

But yeah, obviously the fact that this is on the site means that the staff have some kind of opinion Mit and I don't, so I guess I wouldn't worry until they say something about it.

This submissions was accepted onto the site rather quickly. I think that might say something.

Then that mechanic has poor indication especially when it's the same sprite as the falling/jumping sprite.

Anyways, i'm reviewing this game from my honest point of view. I did come across a few negatives so please don't get harsh if my final review is not what you expected.

Alright. I don't mind some negative criticism. It's what I learn from. Also, I meant to say that it's my fault that it's indicated so poorly. I could not think of a way to convey that, at all.

A double jump would probably break the game, but I think I could use a different sprite for when you do the fancy jump.

Just a suggestion but in case you're fixing this or making a sequel: Maybe a tutorial level before the Main game would help?

I and Vinny were online at the same time and checked out the game before we came to the conclusion that it's worth accepting. I am online often anyway, so when someone else is online too submissions can get accepted really quickly.

The game also isn't against the rules as it is clearly inspired by Mario.

Also, please don't post three times in a row. You can always edit your previous post.

the problem I have with this is that with that logic I can submit a megaman game that has zero Mario elements, but uses Mario physics and it'd be accepted.

I can't see this being based off of SML. it doesn't make sense because of all the extra "features" and how fast you move. sure, SML had really shoddy physics, but that's because there was no momentum. this is just a nitpick, but it would've been better if you had used the GB palette instead of "mmuurgh black and white".

Well, the gameplay isn't so much "happens to have the same physics" as much as it is "Super Mario with a different protagonist and a shoot button" Also, the GB palette slipped my mind completely, but I may include it in a future update. Maybe I could even ditch the Game Boy style and retool it as a Mario game, entirely.

"Also, please don't post three times in a row. You can always edit your previous post."

Oh, and sorry about that. I'm still getting the ropes down.

I don't think you should be able to go on top of the hud.
If you are using GM, the hud's object depth should be about -99999999999999999 or something so it should always stay on top.

That was intentional. It was supposed to add a bit of retro charm to the game. I don't know if it worked out, though.

Just to show some people who may still be wondering why this got accepted even though it does not have Mario in it (even though CrazyRiverOtter seems to have mostly cleared that up) the rules say it is okay:
"All Games should feature Mario and other characters and/or elements from the Mario universe as a primary focus" (Submission Rules)

This game does NOT have any Mario characters as a primary focus, but it DOES have elements from the Mario universe as a primary focus.
