General Commentary and Game Overview
Super Mario 2D Universe is just another one of those many Mario fangames, and in the game, you are, well, obviously in a 2D world.

It seems like Mario has decided to go on a walk through some levels, but however, it looks like there are some hazards in his way, so it's not gonna be a safe walk!

The graphics look really, really, REALLY nice, but is the gameplay itself very good? Let's take a look, shall we?

Pros +Well polished
+Graphics
+Music

Cons -Lack of originality
-The levels feel a little bland
-Earning lives is a bit too easy
-Some of the levels are just remakes of existing levels from various different Mario games
-Overused sound effects

Gameplay
4 / 10
Upon starting the game, I wanted to note that the title screen and pause menu are very polished! Good job, Mario Silva! Now, let's go into the map, shall we? The map looks very linear, because there are no alternate paths.

Okay, let's get into the in-game levels now. Entering the first level, I have noticed that there isn't really anything original in the game, expect for those rainbow stars, which, I'll take a look at them more at the replay section. By the way, the levels feel a little too short to me. Mario Silva, I think you'll have to get your construction skills out there, and build some more stuff into them, so they won't feel too short anymore.

Now, let's look at the second level. As you might have expected, it's pretty much a cave level. *sigh* Why does a lot of Mario fangames have to have a cave as the second level? I haven't seen anything new here too. You might have known what this is, it's one of Mario's hikes, hikes that are filled with enemies and powerups. It's simply a "Generic Hike for Mario", AKA a Hello clone.

Alright, let's skip into the castle level, shall we? Wait, a castle level? Now you might be thinking "Ooh, it's a generic castle level, I bet there must be a generic Boom-Boom battle, or maybe a Koopa Kid battle, no, Bowser battle beats it all!" Bwahahaha! Ah, no, there is no boss here! I guess the boss is too freaking scared of getting killed by just some brown shoes, or is it those fiery orbs? Whatever it is, I'm about to head off into the fifth level.

Before entering the fifth level, I have noticed the word "Retro" is in the level name. Hm, sounds like a remake of an existing level from a Mario game, eh? Well, if you are thinking about that, you are right! Though, not only the fifth level is a remake of an existing level, but pretty much the rest of the levels are remakes of existing levels. Really, you shouldn't make a remake of an existing level, because that is showing a sign of lack of ideas, and is very uncreative.

After completing all ten levels, I have noticed that I have over twenty lives, and I bet you know what that means. Getting extra levels is apparently too easy. I suggest that you should take out some of those coins, and maybe make getting into the top of the flag a little harder.

Graphics
8 / 10
Man, those graphics are looking very nice! Even the HUD looks nice! However, some of those enemies are left unchanged, and some of them seem to clash a little. Also, I have actually mistaken a few background objects as an actual object that you can interact with, especially the cactus.

Sound
7 / 10
Like the graphics, the music is really nice! They are really high-quality, and I haven't heard any problems from them.

However, the sounds seem to be unchanged, and they are quite overused. There are a lot of good alternatives, you know.

Replay
2 / 10
The only kind of collectibles I can see here, are those rainbow stars. Each level has five of them, and while some of them are easy to find, some of them can be a little hard to find. Though, collecting all five rainbow stars will just simply give you an extra life, which is another source of the fact that earning extra lives are too easy. Also, the game doesn't really keep track of whenever you have collected all of the rainbow stars in a level or not, so I'm not really sure if there is a reward for collecting them all in all levels or not. The fact that the levels are too short and feel a little bland doesn't really help the replay value, by the way.

Final Words
4 / 10
You may have used those polishing rags very well, but it happens to be a very polished Hello clone.

Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with having twenty lives after the first ten levels.
