General Commentary and Game Overview
Super Mario Country is DJ Coco's latest fangame. MFGG's second Austrian staff member has a bit of a track record of starting games without finishing them, so seeing this game come to fruition has made for a very happy VinnyVideo! Will this game make you as happy as it made me?

Pros + Wide variety of levels
+ Good use of enemies and obstacles
+ Attractive, consistent Game Boy-styled graphics
+ Solid soundtrack

Cons - Unforgiving difficulty
- No story

Impressions
Gameplay
8 / 10
Super Mario Country boasts 32 levels divided into eight worlds. That's a lot of content by fangaming standards. You can play the first seven worlds in any order you please, but you can't access the final world until you've beaten all of the other worlds. The game draws most of its inspiration from Super Mario Land 2, but it's not an SML2 remake by any means. There's a good variety of enemies and some very fun and original level ideas.

As with Coco's other games, Country is very challenging. While there are a few things that alleviate the difficulty - each level has a halfway flag, and many levels contain Starmen - the game is still very hard. The relatively small screen means it often requires split-second timing to escape a fast-moving enemy.

From what I can tell, the game has no story to speak of. That's fine with me, considering I tend to be more interesting in exploring a wide variety of levels than I am in cutscenes when I'm playing a platformer, but it wouldn't have hurt to have a better idea of why you're traipsing through all these tricky levels.

Graphics
10 / 10
DJ Coco put a lot of effort into the graphics, and it shows! Every level has its own tileset, which is a nice touch, especially since recoloring tilesets to add variety isn't really an option in a Game Boy-styled game.

Several members complained that the Game Boy-styled SMW enemies looked out of place in this game, but they looked fine to me.

Sound
8 / 10
Most of the background music is ripped from Super Mario Land 2, although there's a few tracks from SML and a handful of remixes from other games. Yes, you will hear GB-infused Twilight Princess music here, and it actually works! Some of the songs don't loop cleanly, though, which is a small disappointment.

Super Mario Country has a good variety of sound effects, thanks to my nagging Coco to squeeze some more sounds into the game!

Replay
6 / 10
Super Mario Country is an enjoyable game, but there's little to keep you playing after you've beaten it - assuming you can beat it in the first place, that is.

Final Words
9 / 10
Some of the levels in Super Mario Country have a mean streak, but overall, you'll be glad that you booked a trip to Super Mario Country.

Thank you very much for the very positive review! Glad to see you enjoyed the game, even if you found it rather challenging. But hey - most people nowadays find games too easy, don't they? :P
