The joke here is that it's an Arabian Nights-themed level in a game of the Mario franchise (technically Wario Land series, but that's a subseries of the Super Mario Land series, so it's a Mario franchise), and Sonic had a very infamous Arabian Nights-themed game called "Sonic & The Secret Rings". But what's more funny is: Someone actually made a Mario version of "Sonic & The Secret Rings" already (it's a Super Mario World hack made by MainMemory).

Oh, makes sense. I see the connection now. A lot of Sonic fans don't seem to like Sonic & The Secret Rings much, do they?
