General Commentary and Game Overview
welcome to Super Mario Country! it's a game that looks and sounds like Super Mario Land 2. but does it PLAY like Super Mario Land 2? does it have the charm of Super Mario Land 2? well...

Pros - it looks alright
- some of the music choices aren't bad

Cons - it doesn't play or feel or have the charm of Super Mario Land 2
- WAY too many graphical quirks
- some enemies have the most outrageous hitboxes
- some enemies don't work properly either

Impressions
Gameplay
4 / 10
for a game that seems like it tries to emulate the look, sound and hopefully feel of Land 2, Country really doesn't hit any of the right notes. the physics have no momentum to them and Mario's weight seems nonexistent. Land 2 had almost SMB1-esque physics, while this game seems to play more akin to Land 1, which is infinitely inferior to Land 2 in almost every way. on top of the wonky physics, enemies have hitboxes that are WAY too big for their own good which leads to many an unfair death. many enemies from Land 2 work differently, such as the lanterns in Graveyard Zone, which should be platforms on the top, and only hurt from the bottom.

power ups work a little differently this time around. the fireballs thrown from Fire Mario also disappear when they collide with pipes and blocks. note that I mean the TOPS of blocks and pipes, so if your fireball even looks at a pipe too hard it'll disappear.

Graphics
5 / 10
the graphics are decent. it looks like a gameboy game, though there is some nasty clash with the enemies that were taken from other games, such as the Rexes, as they weren't edited in any way outside of being recolored. besides that, there are WAY too many graphical mishaps in the animations, such as Mario not bobbing properly in his walk, the bells not actually swinging when hit, Goombas having EXTREMELY strange walk cycles, etc

Sound
6 / 10
not really a whole lot to say about the sounds. there are problems such as coin and skidding sounds overlapping causing both to be EXTREMELY loud, and the ever infamous music loops. there is zero reason for the music to not loop. these are songs from the gameboy. they are easily loopable.

also, the remix of You Spin Me Right Round isn't that great. it's also extremely out of place.

Replay
2 / 10
I really wouldn't play this game again. it was a struggle to get through it to begin with. plus the lack of secret levels (which Land 2 had) really don't give you a reason to come back.

Final Words
4 / 10
I'd rather play Land 2 again.

This review would be the worst I have read since WiiBoy's Midas review if it wasn't for me checking the reviews in the queue. As the author of this game, I naturally turn defensive about such devastating reviews, but this review is an outright joke and I requested its removal because nothing here makes sense.

SML2 played nothing like SMB1 and who says I need to emulate SML2's physics anyway? I never intended to copy SML2 in its entirity. Not every fangame has to play like SMB3 you know. Also I don't think of SML1 as inferior to SML2. I still like playing that game a lot.

the carrot works just differently enough to be a nuisance, since you can't just hold down jump anymore
Well, too bad you can hold down jump.

the graphics are decent

there is some nasty clash
SML2's style really is just outlines with solid color fills, what about the enemies looks off? Oh, it's nothing, you just don't like your SMW enemies in SML2.

Same animation as in SML2

the bells not actually swinging when hit
What? They DO swing.

Goombas having EXTREMELY strange walk cycles
What? They just walk like in SML2.

Can of Nothing made it and I think it turned out just fine. If you neglect the fact it's an actual song I think it suits the game just fine.

Again, you raised some valid points I can agree with but this review just seems to have so many wrong facts you base your score on I can barely even take it seriously.

Land 2 didn't play like Mario 3, go back and play it, it's closer to Mario 1 if anything, though looking back Mario 2's physics are the closest. I get that you could make the physics whatever you want, but if you're gonna make the game LOOK like it emulates Land 2, then make it actually emulate Land 2.

for the carrot, no, you can't hold jump. you have to jump, THEN press jump again and hold it to glide. that extra hassle IS a nuisance.

5/10 is decent. with the things I noted it's enough to bring the score down. the Goomba walk cycle in Land 2 looks like this, while yours look like this. also, I recorded myself playing Land 2 and got a clear-cut gif of Mario's walk cycles, both small and super. I recall Country not having the small details of the animations, such as Mario's head moving. and while the bells may not have swung properly in Land 2, it wouldnt've been very hard to make them swing.

and no, putting World enemies in Land 2 isn't that easy. there is a clear-cut style difference and recoloring just won't cut it. don't jump to assumptions like that.

having Right Round as the starman theme doesn't really fit. even if it WASN'T already a song it wouldn't fit. the instruments used don't really sound like GB instruments either, so it actually conflicts a bit with the songs ripped from other GB games.

all in all it wasn't very fun. the physics made platforming and bosses frustrating and the many little nuances added up to be a few large issues.

(also, if the review had wrong facts, I doubt it would've been accepted in the first place.)

The people who accept reviews don't necessarily have played the game, you know.

It's good to see I'm not alone. But 4? I would give this 5 or 6 but anyway...

usually a 5 for me is middle range (or decent). I felt that this was a bit mediocre, so for now it's a 4. if there's an update that fixes a lot of things then it'll get bumped up.

alright so I played some more of Land 2 and the carrot requires pressing and holding jump again to glide, so the point I made in the review is wrong, sorry about that. though, I will say that gliding isn't as comfortable as it is in Land 2, but the point is, that part was wrong, and I apologize. I'll edit the review a bit to compensate now

As someone who has criticized the graphics myself, I have to say your critique is very harsh.

Although the ratings system goes from 1 to 10, 5 doesn't mean "in the middle of quality". 5 means "half-assed". To rate something a 5 is to rate it a failure, but just barely.

This is most obvious in schooling. Scoring 50% grade - 5/10 - is an F. "Decent" or "adequate" graphics are more around a 7 or an 8, which would be a C and a B respectively.
