General Commentary and Game Overview
I love the second Mario Quest. It's pretty bad but it's also a hilarious game with a fair amount of amusing story all over, so naturally you'd assume I would have kind things to say about the first game too, right?

WHOOPS no you'd be wrong.

Pros Not unplayable

Cons Even worse graphic clash than the second game
Story is poorly written and not nearly as funny
Boring on all counts
Really dull and repetitive.

Gameplay

What else can you say about Mario Quest except that it's fairly weak top down shooter thing disguised as some sort of coherent RPG story-type game? All you do is shoot, next area, shoot some more, go to next area. In many ways, it reminds me of certain sections that can be found in - of all games - Paper Mario World. Go figure. Maybe Paper Mario World doesn't stick out as horrendously bad as we once thought!

No, no wait it does.

I don't have much else to say here. You shoot things, they die. Sometimes they don't, which is likely the result of the health going below zero into the negatives (something that could have been easily fixed by triggering death at zero OR BELOW, rather than just at zero). You get some cutscenes, they're painfully slow and not funny. I got a cutscene that wouldn't actually load the next part of it, so the game was stuck. I waited and pressed as many keys as I could, but to no avail. Game was done, I guess.

Graphics
3 / 10
Clash all over, lo-res graphics with less colours than there easily could have been, but at least there's some vague amount of effort. One scene has Bowser steal Mario's car and dangle it over his lava pools... with what is clearly scribbled on MS Paint lines. The car itself looks to be taken from some old DOS game perhaps, and it sticks out quite badly with its baked in shadow below it during said scene.

Bad. Moving on~!

Sound
4 / 10
Standard fare. Low quality sounds, generic MIDIs, blah blah blah.

I'm really starting to run out of things to type in the Sound section for these old fangames. They all draw from the same exact resources of the time, and it shows.

Considering the aforementioned cutscene halt... yeeeeah, don't think so. Apparently the game is unprotected, so you can just open up the source into a Clickteam program of your choice (presumably MMF 1.5 onward) and peak through, but I'm way too lazy to do that. I DID do just that back in the day when I was younger, but I barely remember anything about it. Meh.

Final Words
3 / 10
In contrast to Mario Quest 2 which is a funny, if objectively flawed, classic fangame, the first Mario Quest is just a mediocre experience from the gameplay to the (poorly written) story. The only reason I could see this still being up on the main site is for prosperity purposes - that's it. Avoid unless you're curious about Thunder Dragon's development past.
