General Commentary and Game Overview
Super Mario Country is an interesting romp through a theme lesser seen in fangames: the black sheep era of Game Boy Mario, Yokoi's funhouse mirror interpretations of Miyamoto's mustachioed hero and the adventures he was known to set off on.
Although the game comes pretty close to achieving the same level of zaniness in the environments and world themes, it's just a pinch too unoriginal, reusing enemies from other Mario games in a setting they seem to clash in, and utilizing physics that actually seem like a step back from what Super Mario Land 2 and even 3 brought to the table. For a Land-themed title, Country comes close to hitting the right notes but falls just a few inches too short and into the sours, but with the right amount of cleanup and post-release polish, the game can really becoming a shining star of fangames. So with that in mind, and with my ridiculous love of the Super Mario Land games and the Game Boy in general, I am delivering my critique directly to you, so please understand and consider my opinion on the matter. Please, take a look:
