General Commentary and Game Overview
Super Mario Flashback attempts to create a unique gameplay style by combining the mechanics of 2D and 3D Mario games. And yes, it succeeds!

Pros + Unique, smooth gameplay
+ Wonderful music
+ Great graphics
+ Interesting design
+ Pretty much everything else about the game!

Cons - That star effect could be toned down, I suppose

Gameplay
10 / 10
There isn’t a whole lot to complain about when it comes to… well, anything. But for now we will talk about the awesomeness that is the gameplay.
In this game, the player must collect Power Stars. Each stage seems to have one Power Star in it, which triggers the end of the stage. There are also three green stars hidden in the each stage, which as of now seem to be completely optional to collect.
The stage selection screen is very similar to that of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. You choose a stage by selecting a star, which is either colored or uncolored depending on whether or not you have collected the star. Each stage has its own name, which often hints at what you will be doing in the stage.
Like in SM64 and SMS, the stage remains pretty much the same throughout the available World 1. It does change a bit; blocks and arrows are added to cover up some areas and point you in the direction you should be headed. The different tasks presented and the small changes each time keep the common stage from becoming stale, and actually make this feature really neat! It’s nice being able to get used to the stage and to know it when you enter, but still be presented with new challenges each time.
Everything about the controls is incredibly smooth. The controls are responsive and Mario’s movement is perfect. I haven’t encountered any severe glitches (or any glitches at all, actually).

Graphics
10 / 10
The graphics are absolutely beautiful. Mit’s sprites combined with the game’s effects are very nice to look at. The graphics flow really well and are rarely ever harsh to look at. The only exception would be the star powerup effect, which is a bit harsh. But all the other effects and sprites are beautiful! And the menu screens are all extremely well done and professional looking, too.

Sound
10 / 10
The sounds… oh, those sounds! There are sound effects everywhere that they need to be, plus some more. The music, composed by the talented Can of Nothing, is also absolutely fantastic! It’s not hard to tell that quite a bit of effort went into the sounds department of the game. Everything from the upbeat music to the soothing sounds of Mario’s footsteps (which change depending on the surface he is standing on) is pleasant to listen to.

Replay
10 / 10
It's a short demo, but I can't resist coming back to it. The catchy music, fun gameplay, and beautiful effects... everything is so well done, it's hard not to play this!
For a short Demo, the replay value is far beyond exceptional.

Final Words
10 / 10
Keep up the amazing work, and this could become the best Mario fangame of all time!
Everyone, please download this.

But it's just a demo...
Thanks for the positive review! I guess I can make that starman effect less distracting.
