"The forum will be archived" does not mean "all topics are lost". You'll still have to copy-paste to the MyBB forum, though.

Speaking of which, here's the archive: https://phpbb.mfgg.net/

The phpbb forum was closed down and replaced with the MyBB forum. Old account registrations and topics went with it. The older forum should be available as an archive eventually.

Sigh... SMBFan01, let me explain to you a bit about MFGG's culture as well as the whole controversy over this game.

For the MFGG community, making fan games is an art. Over the years, the community has seen dozens of Super Mario Bros. 3 clones and is officially sick of playing fan games that play more or less the same as official games (actually, they're often worse since their creators generally have minimal experience in level design). If we wanted to play SMB3, we would play SMB3. Funny, isn't it?

To make a game that pleases MFGG, you have to put in some originality and effort. Fan games have to evolve beyond being clones to be considered "good" on MFGG, otherwise they'll either be forgotten or hated for years to come.

A novice making a game clone is understandable: he has little experience making games, and he doesn't know what is expected of him. IAmGreenMike, however, made it abundantly clear that he was out to make a clone and nothing more. From an MFGGer's perspective, IAmGreenMike was being mediocre on purpose--and instead of trying to adapt to or even understand MFGG's culture, he tried to make MFGG adapt to him.

So he and the community argued back and forth while he treated all of us--even the admins--like idiots for having opinions he didn't like, acting like he was the sole voice of reason. In fact, some of his comments come off as misanthropic--as if the entire human race was inferior to him.

When someone submits content to a site like MFGG where members are free to post their opinions, they're going to post their opinions whether that person likes it or not. It doesn't matter if the site isn't that person's intended demographic. If IAmGreenMike didn't intend to appeal to MFGG's audience, he should never have submitted his game to the site in the first place.

Considering the game itself...Mario Tails is basically a 1:1 PC port of Flappy Bird with minor changes. Flappy Bird is a mobile game meant to be played for a few minutes at a time while on the go. Smartphones are far more portable than PCs. That alone makes Mario Tails an inferior experience compared to Flappy Bird. If we wanted to play a Flappy Bird game, we would play Flappy Bird. There is hardly any reason to play Mario Tails instead.

Could some MFGGers have phrased their arguments better? Could some have been a bit more polite? Most certainly. I personally confess that I was less civil than I should have been. That doesn't excuse this game, nor does it excuse anything IAmGreenMike said trying to defend it.

IAmGreenMike, you don't need to re-clarify anything. Many of us understood perfectly well what your reasons were for making this game. We just think your reasons are terrible, we think your game is terrible, we think your clumsy rhetoric is terrible, and--to be frank--we think you need to get over yourself. People like Zero Kirby had calmly tried to explain these things to you, to no avail. Ironically, it is you who has proven himself incapable of accepting other points of view.

You may have apologized to people who "didn't deserve it" (good job, you made a vague apology open to interpretation!) but your words still betray you as static, entitled, and hypocritical--still deluding himself into thinking "MFGG just doesn't get it!!!"

We do get it. And if you're not willing to get it, the door's to your left. I for one don't want that attitude here, and you probably don't want to be here, either.

I'll try to be nice since this seems to be your first submission.

First, you've basically stated that this game is "a tutorial with X theme". Tutorials are meant to show how something works; they're not intended to be good games in and of themselves. Game Maker's click tutorial is meant to show the basics of using the program. As a game, it is simplistic and boring.

Your game is that tutorial with only insubstantial changes, so it is also simplistic and boring. I'd suggest making something simple from scratch, like a Pac-Man clone or a shoot-em-up. Perhaps you could look at MFGG's Action or Minigame categories for inspiration.

Furthermore, you should never have to apologize for having crappy content in your game (in this case, the music). It isn't that hard to find decent quality music. Heck, MFGG even has some under its sounds category.

Tile dimensions in powers of 2 are the standard. 8x8, 16x16, etc. These are used because they were the most efficient for binary CPUs in the 80s and they still are today.

There's nothing wrong with 14x14 tiles, but be aware that graphics with uncommon dimensions may not get a lot of use.

Now watch me defeat Blutorus's review.

why are you trying to "defeat" a joke review for a joke game

My review wasn't listed in this update?

Weird.

First game with a 1/10 first review. Ouch.

I'll make a note to write up a second opinion.

Sometimes the quality control process will take time.

Submissions that are borderline quality will take even longer, as site staff will find it difficult to decide on whether or not it should be accepted.

I'm thankful that you went and fixed the difficulty that was making the game anything but fun. Nonetheless, this game still suffers from stale and hit-or-miss humor.

Vinny should have recently patched the Pepsiman fight. Try downloading it again.

How on earth could you do something so inconceivable!?!?

This is not inconceivable. An inconceivable entity is incapable of being imagined. A human the size of a skyscraper is physically impossible, but can be imagined. A four-sided triangle, which by definition has only three sides, is inconceivable.

In other words, "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

While I respect your right to an opinion, I am nonetheless convinced that your review is absolutely terrible. I am given the impression that you gave the game a perfect score simply because Hello made it, not because of the merits of the game itself. I also get the feeling that you did not make any significant effort to complete the game, let alone finish the first level. Your Replay category, in particular, does not reassure me.

Why is hello still around again?

Because he hasn't done anything that actually merits a ban.

Turd Feast 4 was removed due to negative reception from a lot of people, including myself. Many of us believed the game was hard for the wrong reasons and wasn't very funny.

lol. this guy just recolored silverbolt's sprite then took away the eye and stomachache shading. Overlay them yourself. They're identical. *reported*

I did but thats not the point. The point is the credit should be on the sheet! it's just a recolor

Their feet are drawn differently.
Their necklaces are drawn differently.
Their hands are drawn differently, and AZ's Wart's right hand is more concealed.
Their tongues are drawn differently.
Their cloaks are drawn differently.
Their teeth are drawn differently.
Their shading is different.
Their linework and color palettes, while similar to each other, are not the same.

Maybe you should get your facts straight before you raise a big stink about sprites being stolen.

I think it was good, although a bit lacking in polish and I was expecting a boss or two given the "guarded well" bit.

Reshades will generally be declined, but may be approved if the site staff feel that enough effort was put into them. Nonetheless, don't expect a palette swap to pass quality control.

My faith in Quality Control has been restored.
