GMS Torch Light Engine By: DJ Coco [E] [W]
This example shows you how to create a torch light you can use for cave levels, for instance. It only shows part of the screen and you can use two different tile layers to show how the light affects the tiles.

Example can be seen here:

This example uses shaders, therefore it only works in GameMaker: Studio.

Of course everything's on Studio now, isn't it? What about mac users? Almost, no one on this site takes it into consideration that not everyone in the world has a PC. I don't like complaining, but the whole "everything being for Game Maker Studio" thing is hindering my ability to make my games to their fullest potential.

That is too bad, because Studio is much better than any previous GM version. This example is also bound to use shaders, so it wouldn't work in other GM versions.

Does this use shaders or super slow surfaces?

Both. I wouldn't know about surfaces being super slow. Especially in Studio.

There! I just heard it again! "Game Maker Studio is soooo great" That's wonderful... for PC users! I'm stuck with a Mac, which is the superior operating system for everything I do... EXCEPT game making. I know there's nothing I can do about this, but it's driving me up the wall! Sorry bro, didn't mean to unload all this on you.... Maybe I should vent this on deviantART or something.

Game Maker Studio (version 1.4) has a gold rating on the WineDB. That means that, with a little configuration, you'll most likely get the IDE running just fine with Wine on your hipster OS.
