Was SMRPG tiled like this? Isn't a game like this tiled with diamonds(rotated 45' squares)?

Nope, SMRPG actually uses 16x16 tiles, with each of these tiles consisting of four of the smaller tiles seen in this sheet. (Small tiles = 8 pixels) SMRPG uses three layers for tiles, two layers are for the basic tiles you see in this sheet, layer 3 for shadows, water, clouds, or other effects.
